The emergency fund

The emergency fund chart

What it is: three to six months of essential expenses, in cash, somewhere boring and instantly accessible.

Why it comes first — and it is not the reason usually given. The point is not the interest you earn. It is that without it, the first genuine emergency forces you to sell investments at whatever price exists that day. Emergencies and market crashes correlate: job losses cluster in recessions, which is precisely when your portfolio is down.

Practical shape:
• Keep it in a high-yield savings or money market account
• Boring is the feature — this money has one job
• Size it to *essential* expenses, not your full lifestyle
• Variable income or a single-earner household means aim higher

Chart: the same emergency, met with cash or met by selling.
